Gingerbread Dough for Chickens

We have made a gingerbread house and gingerbread cookies for our flock of chickens and ducks, & not only do they love it, but it has become one of our favorite Christmas traditions ever.

To this recipe below I also added garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and a mixture of herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano. All used to aid chickens in their health! Cinnamon, cloves, and ginger are also very good for them! Aiding in things like digestion, gut health, egg production, and more.

To ice the house & cookies I have used mayo and cream cheese, both work great but the cream cheese needed to be softened first to make it spreadable.

Yes, chickens can eat eggs, they love them and they are very healthy for them!

RECIPE:

1 1/2 cups of all purpose or whole wheat flour

2 tablespoons of ground ginger

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp ground cloves

1/4 cup of molassess

1/4 cup of water

2 tablespoons of vegetable or avocado oil

In a medium bowl whisk together the dry ingredients. In another bowl whisk together the wet. Combine the wet with the dry with a wooden spoon until everything is fully incorporated. Dump out onto a lightly floured surface, roll until about 1/4 inch thick, and cut into your desired shapes. For a gingerbread house I would double this recipe depending on how large youd like to make it.

Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes, then let fully cool. I like to bake on a piece of parchment paper because it allows the finished cookies to lift so easily!

Decoration ideas:

cranberries

raisins

grapes

meal worms

cracked corn

other dried insects

peas

nuts/seeds

pieces of veggies or meat
